Sweet intention turned sour
I don’t know whether it is appropriate to laugh, but sometimes looking at the way things are going behind the curtains of National Council and National Assembly really makes me feel like laughing at the top of my voice. I am sure many people out there feel the same. I mean sometimes, not always. This issue of smoking makes me Read more »
My Kind of Winter
Oh my god, winter vacation is here once again. I don’t know how my friends around the country feel, but this long vacation really scares me. There are reasons to be scared. Winter is a cold season and cold season welcomes cold atmosphere. Cold atmosphere invites sickness and diseases. It is a grave season. People cannot think beyond snow Read more »
The Accidental Tourist
A foreign dog lost its way and got stranded in the jungles of Bhutan. A few days later, he reached a small village somewhere in Bhutan. Since the dog could not understand the language of the natives, he went from one house to another looking for someone who could speak and understand his language. As he walked through the village, Read more »
That has made the difference
The essay question was to write a short story that has to end thus: “That made all the difference.” Of course there were other questions, but they do not really make sense. So, I had no option, but to choose story. I am trying to recount a smaller version of how I attempted that question. I don’t remember all the details and what I have is what my goat-brain can recollect. Read more »
Why can’t I write or speak with confidence?
“This is a good question,” my teacher told me. “Why do you think you can’t write well?” I asked him this question in a hope that I would get some answers and maybe some form of inspiration will come in the process. But here I was trying to think why on earth I can’t write well. I must admit I am a good student. I know that because my teachers tell me and others. I am sure they do not lie. Read more »
Why only women get pregnant?
My mother gave birth to ten children and only seven of her children saw the light of the day. Being the eldest of all is both interesting and distressing. Being the first in the row of ten children in the family, I saw many things, which my brothers and sister failed to experience. It pained my heart to see my mother every time she gave birth. By the time a baby cried, my mother would be half dead. Read more »
Village hunting and Corporal Punishment
One early morning our headmaster caught us. I mean all of us. There were six of us in the group. Our parents used to say that going in the groups of six is not good and true to that we were caught red handed. Our teachers said we had violated the school rules by going out at night. We didn’t do anything wrong to the community. We didn’t steal farmers’ fruits from their orchard. Read more »
The lost underwear and corporal punishment
One day someone stole my underwear. I had let it dry outside that night after a cold bath on that Sunday evening. I had a pair of undergarments – they were twins because I bought them from a same shop during winter vacation. Thank god I didn’t lose both of them. I still had the other one worn. Otherwise I would be feeling uncomfortable going to the class on Monday morning. Read more »

Our ever changing habits
In our life going to different places is a very good learning experience. Sometimes it is also very embarrassing not being able to do what others in that place are doing. People don’t like change. Those who learn to change with the change in time and place are happier and satisfied in life. Others are left unhappy and always dissatisfied. This is what I learnt when I changed my Read more »
Torma-men and torma-women
One day there was a very big rimdro going on in the next house. A group of lamas and gomchens were performing very different rimdro. We didn’t know what it was. We didn’t see anyone getting sick in the house. But we agreed the family was doing to chase away the evils that were affecting the family and their house. In the village we believe and our parents tell us Read more »
The way they cured our sickness
There were some boys who pretended to be sick and did not go to school. Those were the boys who hated studying. They just want to sleep and stay idle. Some came out of the hostel as soon as everyone entered the classroom and played bhaktang ball behind our hostel toilet. I thought it was a waste of time and resources. I did not know what if the parents came to know Read more »
Next year we will be very careful
We all believed him when he said that he would be free and fair to everyone if we give him chance to serve as the school captain. He said he will take care of us from bully students. He told us that if we make him become the school captain, he would remove unfair rules. He also told us that he would be friends even with a small student. “Because we are all same; Read more »
Happiness is multi-dimensional
I visit my uncle in Thimphu. My mother tells me my uncle is an important Dasho in some important offices. My Aunt I realized also has an important office to attend. They live in a very big house with many rooms. Some rooms are not used at all. They don’t have any children. I heard they were married many years ago. Sometimes I think God is not so fair. In the village, Read more »
