Plight of an Ox
Beautiful ox is born to a farmer
Farmer becomes overjoyed
He is happy to get helping hand in the field.
He tends and tames the calf
Before it could stand on its feet firmly
It is made to work in the field.
In the scorching sun and heavy shower
Little or nothing in its stomach
It toils and tills the field.
With exhaustion and hunger
It collapses only to be woken up by sharp whip
Blood oozes from its body
A tear of blood runs down its eyes
Thousands of flies swarm about the wound
It utter the cry but fall into deaf ear
Finally with much pain and misery
The plowing and tilling work
Get over and farmer starts planting
Farmer has children to feed
And being lean season
he has no income
He sought for an alternative to earn money
Takes the poor animal to butcher
And sell it to slaughter house
Though not treated well by its owner
When it is made to get into transporting truck
It refuses as if it knew its death
Then it’s owner and the butcher hit with iron rod
and twist its tail
It wince and its noise
Breaks onlookers heart
Without remorse and gratitude
Farmer greedily takes the cash and disappears
The poor animal is driven away to a slaughter place.
Nobody hears the cry of pain and sees the tears of blood
And feel the breaking of its heart
With pain and dread of the impending death.
It seems like aeon when it reaches its death place
Broken in spirit and the body
Butcher drags it out of the truck and tries its feet on the pole
Takes the machete and cut off its head.
Deprived of speech, only if they knew how to speak
it could have begged for mercy or bribed the butcher
Poor animal it can’t even utter a cry of pain
Alas! Human such a rational being can be mute
Even if small needle is to prick us
We wince and wail
But we don’t give a second thought about others.
Are we that cruel! For our greed we kill and hurt others
Don’t we believe in Cause and Effect!
Buddha said what goes around comes around
